Changpeng Zhao (CZ), the former Binance CEO, has shared his approach to dealing with daily noise and fear, uncertainty, and doubt (FUD) in the crypto industry — and in most cases, it comes down to one principle: don’t engage.

Speaking during a recent AMA session, Zhao said constant exposure to misinformation and criticism can be distracting and counterproductive. Rather than responding to every accusation or rumor, he believes reducing noise is often the more effective strategy.

“The best way is to not handle it,” CZ said,
adding that most FUD does not require a response.

When Clarification Is Necessary

Zhao acknowledged that silence is not always the answer.

In situations where misinformation risks misleading users — particularly newcomers who may not yet be familiar with the high levels of noise common in crypto — he said clarification becomes important.

Short, factual responses can prevent confusion and limit damage. However, he cautioned against prolonged engagement, noting that extended back-and-forth exchanges often amplify narratives rather than resolve them.

Reducing Noise Without Silencing Feedback

To manage daily social media noise, CZ said he uses blocking and muting selectively.

He explained that muting is often preferable to blocking. While blocking alerts the other party — sometimes giving them a sense of validation or attention — muting quietly removes the noise without escalating the situation.

“When you block them, they sometimes know — it’s like a validation for them. When you mute them, they don’t know,” he said.

At the same time, Zhao emphasized that he is careful not to silence constructive criticism. The goal, he suggested, is not to create an echo chamber, but to filter out distractions while preserving meaningful dialogue.

Distinguishing FUD From Feedback

Zhao noted that not all negative commentary stems from bad intent. Some users repeat critical narratives due to misunderstanding rather than malice.

Such feedback, he said, should not be dismissed outright.

Despite advocating selective disengagement, CZ stressed that open communication remains essential. He continues to host AMAs and interact directly with the community, arguing that ecosystem growth depends on transparent dialogue.

“We always welcome feedback,” CZ said, adding that community engagement helps projects improve over time.

A Broader Lesson for the Industry

In an industry often defined by volatility — both in markets and in narratives — Zhao’s approach reflects a strategic balance: ignore the noise, clarify when necessary, and preserve space for genuine feedback.

For crypto leaders operating under constant scrutiny, the challenge may not be responding louder — but responding less.
